MESSAGE ON INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY FOR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

International Volunteer Day, we recognize millions of people around the world who give their time and talent to make global challenges, from volunteers working in their own communities in adapting to climate change and poverty reduction to support the causes of global peace, justice and the Millennium Development Goals.
Forty years ago, the UN General Assembly called for the establishment of United Nations Volunteers (UNV). Since then, tens of thousands of UNV volunteers have contributed to our overall mission, working with many United Nations organizations, programs and agencies, and peacekeeping and special political missions.

I also welcome the strong growth in recent years of online volunteering, connecting people - professionals, students, housewives and people with disabilities around the world - and gives them opportunities to contribute to development and work United Nations.

Again, online volunteering has great potential and encouraged all partners to explore what more can be done to harness the power of the Internet this way. This day also marks the participation of many volunteers who work with governments, NGOs, civil society and in their own communities to improve the lives of those around him. Volunteering helps unite us as individuals and societies. Is a powerful way to mobilize all sectors of society as active partners in building a better world. Together, we will strengthen the institutional frameworks that support volunteering. Together, we will use the tenth anniversary of International Year Volunteer, which is marked in 2011 (AIV 10), to find new areas where volunteering can make a difference. Honor volunteering as an expression of our common humanity and a way to promote mutual respect and solidarity.
